Randall was a Kentuckian, and was also a confederate ‘butternut’ soldier. After the war, he returned to the hills of Kentucky (living on the other side of the river from West Virginia). Most know Ran’l as the patriarch of the McCoy family, and a participant in the greatest family feud in US history. His hard feelings toward the Hatfields is legendary.

Devil Anse Hatfield, the patriarch of the Hatfield clan, was raised in Logan County, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was once a captain in the Confederate Army, and later returned to Logan County and became involved in the timber business. Of course, most remember Devil Anse as the leader of the famous and bloody Hatfield-McCoy Feud. He was an intimidating mountain man who was happiest when he was in the woods hunting.
